YEEVS

^^

When: Saturday 14th September
Where: Slyfox

The journey Sydney band YEEVS has been taking to get to this point is one marked by consistently strengthening songwriting, captivating live shows and a thriving sense of musical identity that drives each release. This year, the trio will release their long awaited debut, self-titled album; from it, YEEVS continue to endear with a passionate cut of indie-rock in ‘Can’t Be Seen’ The urgency of the single springs forth instantly in Bradley Cork’s distinguishable vocals, while the percussion and rhythmic progressions mirror the punch packing music by the likes of Boy & Bear, Modest Mouse and The Teskey Brothers. ‘Can’t Be Seen’, exemplary of the band’s spirited approach to producing music, was recorded out on a farm in Wisemans Ferry in regional NSW, before being mastered at Sydney’s Studio 301. “The farm is a magical place, it’s a breeding ground for creativity and stillness, for friendship and solitude and to maintain an amount of escapism from normality (no phone reception and country air will do a lot for you).” YEEVS. Since the band’s inception four years ago, YEEVS have become a captivating force on Sydney’s indie scene, with emotive live shows and a strong interest in furthering themselves sonically positioning the band as ones to watch on the East Coast. Earlier in 2019, YEEVS released ‘Moving Magnets’, which offered fans their first insight into the debut YEEVS record; highlighted by depth and richness in tone, the single laid great foundations that ‘Can’t Be Seen’ has capitalised on. Working with director Nick McKinlay, YEEVS deliver a fitting visual accompaniment to ‘Can’t be Seen’, filmed throughout Sydney’s inner-west, flipping perspective and showing the song in a quirky new light. “The video was shot in various locations around inner-west Sydney including Petersham, Ashfield and Marrickville. We were needing an external character to literally drag around these different settings and locations, so who better than our director Nick McKinlay? The video has a bit of a menacing feel to it but it all works out in the end for all involved.” YEEVS.

Tropical Fu*k Storm

^^

Q Magazine. “Tropical Fuck Storm is a torrid, messy, thoroughly irreverent and acidly funny project.” The Quietus. Taikoz: Seven Flowers

^^

When: Friday 18th October
Where:
City Recital Hall, 2 Angel Place, Sydney
Time: 8pm-10pm
Cost: $59-$99

"The Flower is the Mind, the seed is technique." Zeami Fushikaden (The Transmission of Style and the Flower). Noh playwright and theoretician Zeami wrote these words in his once secret 15th Century treatise Fushikaden. In the first chapter, Zeami describes the seven periods of an artist’s life and work which, in terms of Noh, begins at the tender age of 7! In a happy coincidence, Taikoz and guest artists closely associated with the ensemble embrace all seven of Zeami’s ‘ages of the artist’. And so, from youngster to elder, Seven Flowers explores the many faceted phases of an artist’s life and work. Featuring new works by Swiss composer Fritz Hauser (Shong), Western Australia’s Stuart James (Kinabuhi | Kamatayon) and Taikoz’s Artistic Director Ian Cleworth (The Place Where Nothing Is Done), Seven Flowers combines spectacular taiko drumming with beautiful song, dynamic movement, colourful percussion, and an evocative stage design by artists Bart Groen and Emma Hack.

Two Door Cinema Club

^^

When: Thursday 28th November
Where:
Enmore Theatre

Secret Sounds Present TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB 2019 AUSTRALIAN TOUR. First an indie sensation, then a stadium-slaying juggernaut, now experts in the subtle art of pop seduction, Irish heroes Two Door Cinema Club are celebrating the fevered reception to their just-dropped fourth record False Alarm with a string of unmissable appointments across Australia in November. Described by Clash as “a game-changing record for the future of indie-rock”, False Alarm was released on June 21 and signals another chapter in the impressive re-birth of a band adored for their kinetic post-punk energy, world-weary lyricisms and recent forays into Kraftwerk-esque stylized synth-pop. Led by the unmistakably sonorous vocals of Alex Trimble and backed with vigorous ease by Sam Halliday (bass) and Kevin Baird (drums), Two Door Cinema Club have been much- loved since they burst onto the landscape in 2009 with the release of their debut Tourist History. Tracks from that record such as ‘Undercover Martyn’ and ‘What You Know’ were adopted as anthems of a nascent movement of UK based guitar acts catapulting themselves onto the worlds stage. Bands like The Wombats and The Maccabees also lived inside this orbit and in the late-naughties, early-aughts it became impossible to escape the kind of razor-sharp songcraft that Trimble and his cohorts were unleashing.
